Issue No. 9

Four schools have not lost a game,
and Pod 3 has none of them

Saturday, October 24, 2026

Four of the thirty schools in the NOVA Flag Football Conference have not lost a game. Madison, Alexandria City and West Potomac have each won all seven they have played. McLean are five and zero with one drawn, the 6 to 6 against Washington-Liberty in the opening week.

They sit in four different pods. Pod 3 has none of them, and it is the one pod where the school at the top of the table has lost a game.

Centreville lead Pod 3 at five wins, one loss and one draw. Fairfax are on four, one and one, and Lake Braddock on four, two and one. Fairfax have four games left and the other two have three.

Pod 3 has also produced two of the five drawn games the conference has played, Fairfax and Lake Braddock at nil nil in the opening week and Centreville and Woodson at six each on October 14.

Week four

Twenty five games went on the evenings of Tuesday October 20 and Wednesday October 21, fifteen on the Tuesday and ten on the Wednesday. The results and the standings come from Dick Adams, the flag football commissioner at Fairfax County Public Schools, who sent them on October 22. All twenty five carry a score. Pod 1 did not play on the Tuesday, and Pod 3 and Pod 5 did not play on the Wednesday. None of the twenty five was drawn.

It was the conference's highest scoring week so far, 715 points, against 661 in the opening week, 567 in the second and 563 in the third. Both schools scored in fifteen of the twenty five games, which is more than in any week before it.

Hayfield won twice on the Tuesday and scored 32 in both, which is their highest of the season. Their scores in order are 22, 6, 13, 12, 32 and 32. South Lakes won twice on the Wednesday, 19 to 0 and 28 to 6, and the 28 is their highest of the season. Centreville's 34 against Woodson is their highest, ahead of the 20 they scored earlier the same evening. McLean's 35 against Marshall is theirs, and Mount Vernon's 18 against Lewis is theirs.

Falls Church and Meridian are two different schools

Both appear in these tables and they are not the same program. Falls Church High School is a Fairfax County school and plays in Pod 4. Meridian is the Falls Church City school and plays in Pod 2.

Loudoun

The Loudoun County semifinals and final were played on Tuesday October 13 at Potomac Falls. Lightridge are the county’s first champions. Lightridge beat Heritage 18 to 12, Riverside beat Freedom 6 to 0, and Lightridge won the final. No score has been published for the final.

The three results come from LCPS Athletics, the school district’s athletics account, and reached us on October 24 from Kevin Weeren, athletic director at Freedom.

Corrected Monday, October 26. This issue went out on Saturday, October 24 carrying the line “We have not been able to find a score for the three games, and they go up when they land.” The results arrived later that Saturday, after the issue was built, and the two paragraphs above replace that line. The original wording is quoted here rather than deleted.

What is coming

The NOVA Flag Football Conference plays again on Tuesday October 27 and Wednesday October 28, and the regular season finishes on Tuesday November 3 and Wednesday November 4. Games go at 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00, two or three of them back to back at one host school.

Fifty fixtures remain, twenty five in each of the two weeks. Every pair inside a pod meets twice and nobody plays outside their pod.

The playoffs are on Wednesday November 11 at Hayfield and Falls Church, and on Saturday November 14 at Robinson Secondary School, where the final is at 12:30. We have not been told how the playoff field is chosen.

The pod tables after week four

These are computed from the scores of all one hundred games played, with a drawn game counting as half a win. The four schools without a loss are marked.

The tables are sorted by winning percentage, then by wins, then alphabetically. That is our sort and not an official ranking. The conference has not published a standings order, so where two schools are level the alphabet does the work rather than anything that looks like a judgement.

Winning percentage leads because the schedule is uneven. Washington-Liberty and Yorktown have played eight games, sixteen schools have played seven and twelve have played six. Every school plays ten, so what is left runs from two games to four, and ordering on wins alone would rank a school for having played more football.

The conference page carries all one hundred games with the source behind each week.

Report a score

Anyone can send us a final. The form takes about half a minute and asks for the two schools, the score and how you know. Coaches and athletic directors can send a photograph of the scoresheet instead of typing anything. Everything goes up free, credited to whoever gave it to us, and if we get something wrong we correct it and say in print that we were wrong.
