We spent two months calling this Fairfax. It is not Fairfax. It is thirty high schools playing in five pods of six, drawn from four school divisions: Fairfax County, Arlington, Alexandria City and Falls Church City. The league office sits in Fairfax, which is how we got the name wrong.
Dick Adams, who runs flag football for Fairfax County Public Schools' student activities office, sent us the results, the league's own standings and the full fixture list, and gave us permission to publish the schedule and the results. He sends the results every week, and everything on this page comes from what he sends. The league's name is the NOVA Flag Football Conference. We spent a week calling it the Northern Virginia league because nobody we asked had a name for it, and Mr. Adams gave us this one on October 9.
How this league is built
Five pods of six schools. Inside a pod, every pair meets exactly twice, which gives each school ten regular-season games and the league 150. Nobody plays outside their pod.
Games are Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, in slots at 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00, with two or three played back to back at one host school. A team's night is usually two games, not one. The regular season opened on September 29 and ends on November 4.
Loudoun played seventy three games this season without a single tie. Northern Virginia managed three in its first week.
That is not a knock on anyone. It is the clearest sign yet that two leagues ten weeks into the same brand-new sport have not yet agreed on what a season looks like. Loudoun runs a seventeen-school single table, one game a night, no two teams meeting twice, and settles ties on the field. Northern Virginia runs closed pods, doubleheaders, and lets a drawn game stand as a draw.

Twenty-five games on September 29 and 30. Three were drawn. Eleven ended with one side held scoreless.

Twenty six fixtures across Tuesday October 27 and Wednesday October 28, from the schedule and results document Mr. Adams sent on October 29 and from his note of November 1. Twenty two carry a score. Three were forfeits and carry none: Madison beat Meridian, and West Potomac and South County both beat Lewis. Pod 3 did not play on the Tuesday, and Pod 1, Pod 2 and Pod 4 did not play on the Wednesday. Woodson and Fairfax finished level at nil, and the conference counts a tie as half a win.
Two fixtures moved and we had both in the wrong place until Mr. Adams told us on November 1. Pod 4's five games at Annandale were played on Tuesday October 27, not Wednesday October 28, because Annandale was hosting field hockey playoffs. West Potomac played South County in this week rather than on November 3, and Mr. Adams has counted that game in his standings. No score has been published for it and we have asked him for one. It is shown at South County on the Tuesday because that is the one block in the week where both schools were already playing.

These are computed from the one hundred and twenty two scored games above. A forfeit adds a win for one school and a loss for the other and no points to either. Pods are ordered by win percentage, counting a tie as half a win, then by wins, then alphabetically. The league has not published its tiebreakers.
Annandale beat Falls Church 7 to 6 on October 13 at Justice. The score was left blank on the results sheet that carried the rest of that week, and Mr. Adams supplied it on October 20. He also corrected Langley to three and two and Oakton to three and one.

Corrected Sunday, November 1. This page carried West Potomac at eight and nil and South County at four, three and one, marked as disagreeing with Mr. Adams’s own standings, which had nine and nil and four, four and one. His figures were right and ours were wrong: West Potomac played South County inside week five rather than on November 3, and we were working from the older schedule. The rows above are his. The For and Against columns for those two schools do not include that game, because no score has been published for it.
Week six
The twenty four games of week six were scheduled for Tuesday November 3 and Wednesday November 4, fourteen on the Tuesday and ten on the Wednesday. No result from either night has been published yet, and they go up when they land. The fixtures below are as the schedule had them on June 11. High school schedules move. Where a block shows no site, it is because neither document names one, not because it is undecided.

The postseason

Seeds one, four, five, eight and nine play at Hayfield. Seeds two, three, six, seven and ten play at Falls Church. The 6:00 first round pairs the eighth seed with the ninth at Hayfield and the seventh with the tenth at Falls Church. The 7:00 quarterfinals are the fourth seed against the fifth and the third against the sixth. At 8:00 the top two seeds meet the first round winners, the first seed at Hayfield and the second at Falls Church.
The four quarterfinal winners go to Robinson Secondary School on Saturday November 14. The two from Hayfield meet in one semifinal and the two from Falls Church in the other, at 10:00 and 11:00, and the final is at 12:30.
No seed is named here and no school is placed in the bracket. The seeding runs on the last week of games, which has not been published, and Mr. Adams’s own document says his projection will change with it.
Corrected Monday, November 2. This page said the field was not in either document and reasoned that five pod winners could not fill an eight team bracket on their own. The bracket is a ten team bracket and we had no source for eight. The shape we guessed at was right, that some schools arrive seeded and others play their way in, and the number was ours rather than anybody’s.
Where the two seasons sit together
Loudoun opened on August 18 and crowns a county champion at Potomac Falls on October 13. Northern Virginia opened on September 29 and crowns one at Robinson on November 14. Between them they run from the third week of August to the middle of November, and for one week in October they overlap completely.
What we do not know yet
- What the league is called. Mr. Adams asked us to say pod rather than conference, and we do. The schedule spreadsheet's own column headings say Conference. ✓ Answered October 9. It is the NOVA Flag Football Conference, and the five groups inside it are pods. The spreadsheet’s own Conference headings are the wrong word for the groups, not for the league.
- Pod 1's second set. The results sheet prints those three games at McLean under September 30 and notes beside them that they were played September 29. We have left them on September 30, where the schedule puts them.
- Host sites for five of the sixty blocks. Neither document names them, and all five are in week six.
- Whether 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00 are stated anywhere as evening. They are not, in either document. The Saturday playoff slots are written as 10am, 11am and 12:30, so the weekday slots are plainly evening, but that is our reading and not the source's words.
One game with two sources
Chantilly 12, Westfield 0. We read that off the county's own results system in August and published it before any of this arrived. It matches Mr. Adams's record exactly, which makes it the only score in this league that two independent sources have given us the same way. Everything else on this page rests on one document, and we would rather say so than let the length of the page imply otherwise.
